Chege Wa Kariuki

Chege's expertise spans from tiny jumping spiders to the majestic African Elephant; however, his primary passion lies in the fascinating world of birds in East Africa. As a former full-time field ornithologist at the Department of Ornithology, National Museums of Kenya, his responsibilities included bird banding/ringing, where he gained crucial knowledge of native birdlife both in hand and in the field. Furthermore, his experience as a museum guide transformed him into an all-round naturalist with interests in prehistory, paleontology, and anthropology. He has been instrumental in training national and local birding safari guides across Kenya, Tanzania, and Rwanda and has lectured on the Fundamentals of Ornithology Course for 15 years—a prestigious program run by the National Museums of Kenya & Nature Kenya (Birdlife International partner). As an active member of the Bird Committee of Nature Kenya, Chege has personally identified over 975 bird species in Kenya since beginning his birding journey in 1999. Additionally, he teaches local communities how to make fireless cookers to help preserve forest habitats. He holds a bronze medal from the Kenya Professional Safari Guide Association (KPSGA) and is an accomplished wildlife photographer who continuously improves his skills in recording bird songs. Above all, watching and finding birds (including rare and specialty species) is both his hobby and profession—be warned that you'll be paying him to do what he loves most!
